You can claim HRA when paying rent to a GPA holder. To ensure the claim is valid, maintain a registered rent agreement, use banking channels for payments, keep signed rent receipts, and provide the GPA holder’s PAN if your annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh. The most critical factor is proving that the rental arrangement is a genuine, arm’s-length transaction where you are a bona fide tenant.
