Hi,

I am a student pursuing PhD in Europe since 2012. I have only filed my IT returns once for AY-2013-2014 when I was working for short duration. I have been a NRI since then including for AY-2014-2015. I had zero income in India in the particular year FY 2013-2014. I receive scholarhsip here for my education. I did not file returns in India, as I was not earning anything. However, I received the following reminder mail from the Tax dept.  Does this mean I need to file return ? Thanks a lot.

"We notice that you have not e-filed your Income Tax Return for AY 2014-15. This is a gentle reminder since 31st March 2016 is the last date to file your Income Tax Return for AY 2014-15. E-file early to avoid the last minute rush.

You are, therefore, kindly requested to login to https://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and download the free return preparation software with a host of new features to help you in preparing the Income Tax return and submit your return. Please take some time to browse through all the value –added services offered on the E-filing website that will help you prepare your return accurately and guide you in case of any prior pending items.

The Department will monitor compliance in this regard and may initiate necessary follow-up action in case of any default.

In case you have already e-Filed for Income Tax Return for AY 2014-15, kindly ignore this email."

It is only reminder which is sent to all. You just need to sir back and relax. No need to file any return as you are not obligated to file return.
Sit back and relax *.............

Dear student,

If you have filed the return for AY 2013-14 in India, it is suggested to file the return for AY 2014-15 as well (with NRI status) &  NIL taxable Income (NIL return) since you are not earning any income.

In todays date, filing return online has become easiest job, which gives immense and unknown benefits in the long run. In case, you travel back to India, your uptodate IT return records will fetch you your requirements without any hurdles.

Moreover, it is your decission to proceed further-this was just a suggestion.

Thanks a lot for the reply and suggestion. My only concern is if I file now, it would mean I need to file for next year and so on. This will continue to go on. I am going to be NRI for the coming next few years, as I will get a permanent visa here.  I have not done any financial transaction in India, and  I do not have any financial presence in India in terms of bank accounts or any income for the duration of being a NRI except for a NRE bank account whose interest as I understand is tax free.

I understand the procedure to efile is extremely simpe these days, however,  I am more concerned about filing returns then every year especially since I am not going to return back to India in next few years.

Is it really necessary to file the tax returns when my income is(zero)  below the exemption limit ?  Even the year that I filed my returns AY 2012-2013 my income was close to the exemption limit.
