best way is to contact your assessing officer and ask him for corrections .

or,

you can also contact to your bank.

And don't ever try to revised the return of the previous year for which u have wrongly deposited the tax

Write to the concerned A.O stating that the said mistake was involuntary and by inadvertance so we request you to consider the payment of tax for so ans so year. preserve the acknowledgement and in case of any queries or corrorpondence from the A.O reply to him accordingly - don't forget to mention the Bank name, branch, code no. and challan no where tax is paid.

agreed with above replies

hi Guys

Similar case happened with me also....

i have quoted Ay. 2011-12 instead of 2010-11 while making e-payment of self assessment tax........

then i approched Income tax office.. then said there is no provision with dealing with

such situation as NOWadays payment goes to NSDL account and we can't rectify it..........

can somebody tell how to overcome from above problem///////////

Challan correction is possible, though I am not sure if the AY can be corrected.  You can claim the challan in your return of income and when it put through the Departmental software, it will show up a mismatch and would create a demand.  After this, it can be taken up u/s 154 with the correct challan details which will enable the Assessing Officer to correct the challan and give credit for the same.

Similar case I had seen once and in such problem  nothing  was done and treated as like there was no such mistake and there was no problem.
