Recently the Income Tax Department has initiated a new facility of direct login and resetting of forgot password of e-filing portal using net banking account of the tax payer.
.
At present the facility is available through the following banks:

.
The steps are as follows:
-> Taxpayer should be a registered user of the e-filing portal.
-> PAN details should have already been submitted to the bank.
-> After logging into the net banking account, select “Income Tax e-Filing Login” tab/menu item.
-> Select the account number and enter the PAN for verification and click submit.
-> Accept the rules and regulations.
-> Confirm the redirection to the Income Tax Department e-Filing account - home page.

Have you tried the otp option under forgot password
Easy way out except the above suggested is just drop a mail to validate @ incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in with your clients PAN, DOB, Address on Pan and his father's name. And you should get the password within few hours. Anyway i would love to try the login using banking method as suggested by deepak ji

OP did said that bank account is not applicable, so ... how net banking ?

Another option [beside the one told by Mr. Sahil Bhatia] is to use [OTP] option from forgot password

Since your client is salaried employee you can use the option of

selecting new mail id and phone & select option of 26AS [TAN] Wherein you will have to enter TAN of the employer
