Proprietor doing export require Professional tax ID and & its certificate ID or not ?

Starting a Proprietorship for an Export business do I really require a Professional tax ID and & its certificate ID.

Because when I was working as an employee in an MNC company then my company was paying TDS including 200 rupees as Professional tax every month from my salary and they didn't give me any Professional tax ID or its certificate ID so I don't know where to get this Professional Tax id or certificate if it is mandatory for me?.

Please help me out by simply telling that Professional tax is mandatory or not for my business layout.

Where do I get my Professional tax ID number or its Certificate ID number if those were generated by my employer on my behalf of me but never given to me ? or they are generated new every time when a person joins a different company?

Hey Mack! Here’s a straightforward take on your question about Professional Tax (PT) for a Proprietorship doing exports:

1. Is Professional Tax mandatory for a Proprietor (Export Business)?

  • Professional Tax is a state-level tax, so rules differ slightly across Indian states.

  • Generally, Professional Tax is applicable on individuals engaged in any profession, trade, calling, or employment.

  • For Proprietors running a business, PT is usually applicable, because you’re considered a professional/self-employed.

  • Whether PT applies to your export business depends on the state where your business is registered (because PT is levied by states).

  • Some states exempt certain categories or have thresholds (e.g., turnover limits or specific business types exempted).

  • So, in most states, yes, PT registration and payment is mandatory for proprietors.

2. What about PT when you were an employee?

  • When employed, your employer deducts and pays PT on your behalf.

  • You don’t get a separate PT ID or certificate personally, as the liability is on the employer.

  • The PT registration is for the employer entity, not individual employees.

  • So no separate PT ID for employees.

3. What happens when you start your own proprietorship?

  • Now you are the employer as well as the professional.

  • You must register your proprietorship for Professional Tax in your state (if applicable).

  • You will get a Professional Tax Registration Number or Certificate for your business.

  • You will be responsible to pay PT on your own (monthly or quarterly depending on the state rules).

  • You cannot rely on your old employer’s PT registration for your proprietorship.

4. How to get Professional Tax ID / Certificate?

  • Visit your State Professional Tax Department or Commercial Taxes Department’s website.

  • Fill the Professional Tax registration application as proprietor.

  • Submit documents like PAN, Aadhaar, proof of business address.

  • After registration, you will get a PT registration number and certificate.

  • This registration is separate and distinct from any previous PT paid by your employer.

Summary for you:

Situation Professional Tax Applicability PT ID / Certificate
Employed in company Paid by employer on your salary No personal PT ID; employer holds it
Proprietor of export business PT likely applicable in your state You must register and get your own PT ID

Final Tip:

Check your state's Professional Tax website or tax office for exact details (for example, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, etc. have their own portals).
