Practice area in indirect taxation

Since indirect taxes is a procedure oriented law, it requires more practical exposure in different areas. If you intend to join a firm, please choose one, which gives you the greatest exposure, irrespective of the monetary return.

Please start reading various judgments of CESTAT, Hon'ble High Court and Supreme Court on the subject, so that you will gain an in-depth understanding of the subject and the way in which sections and rules are interpreted by the judiciary.

Is it advisable to work for any manufacturing industry for 1-2 years and then join a CA firm so that we can have good command over excise, custom & service tax

Yes. It is preferable to work in industry before getting into practice. Experience in manufacturing would be a plus point, to have an idea of procedural intricacies, understanding the mode of dealings and maintaining relations with department.
