Anyone can please tell me how many promotors are required to form a private company..

Promoters do form a company and among them who sign in the subscripttion clause in the memorandum will become the members of the company. So as we know two members are required to form a Private limited company.. When a company is formed, The promoter has no meaning and he ceased to exist.

Promoters are the ones who form the company.After the incorporation their role ends. If they wish they can become the shareholders or director or both.
For Private Company minimum 2 subscribers and 2 directors are required.
In public Company minimum 7 subscribers and 3 directors are required.

Any no. of promoters may initiate the process to incorporate any type of company. even one or more. Rest as Charu and Pratap said.
