Quick Summary
If you return to India permanently, your NRE Fixed Deposit can remain until maturity. However, upon your return, you'll need to reclassify your NRE accounts as 'resident' or transfer them. Consequently, the interest earned on these deposits will become taxable in India, as the tax exemption only applies to individuals residing outside India.
When you return to India permanently, you will be required to designate the NRE accounts as “resident" or transfer it to Resident foreign currency accounts and the interest income earned on the same will be taxable in India.
The exemption is only for person resident outside India.
