A day after they performed bypass surgery on him, doctors today announced that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is making “excellent progress” and would be able to resume work much earlier than anticipated. Singh is expected to spend about seven to eight days in the hospital, including three days in the intensive care unit.Within 24 hours of his surgery, Singh also gave a signal for a larger political audience. “I still have a lot to contribute to public life,” he told doctors.“He is fully conscious, quite comfortable and is eager to return to work as soon as possible,” K S Reddy, personal physician to the PM, said.
