Long term capital gain

Sir

I have purchased shares of some listed cos. some 15 to 20 years back. I am holding them in my demat account since then. Now I am not getting any record of purchase that is date and rate of purchase. Stock broker from whom I done the transaction is no more. All are listed cos. I have holding statement from begining. Now if I sell them how will I calculate long term capital gain. Some of the shares are transfered from my father to me. All are in demat account. Can I gift all shares to my children if I am not able to sell?

I have asked this in stocks and shares catagory but it is not reflected there.

Please advise.

Thank you

If you have statments which can prove the shares were procured by you before 1st Oct., 2004....

No need to pay capital gains over it. The long term capital gain will be exempt u/s. 10(38), provided you sell it through registered stock exchange.

But how to calculate gain if I don't know cost of aquisition

Well, if all the stocks which you hold are more then 17 years old......... search the price as on 2001 from the link:  stocks-prices/historic-stock.   and estimate capital gain based on 01.04.2001 price.

Thanks lot Sir. Sorry for reply from my side
