ITR Filing for beginers

Hi everyone,

Here with I have some question as a beginner for filing ITR, I haven't filed my ITR for last 2 years ( when I was having salary more than 2.5L but less than 5L ) and for current year I am having salary more than 5LPA, is it mandatory to file ITR for the last 2 years? if so can you tell me why as I was having CTC below 5LPA? and how to file the ITR for current year or all 3 years if applicable? I appreciate your inputs.

Quick Summary
This discussion addresses an individual's queries about filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) as a beginner. They are seeking to understand if filing is mandatory for the past two years, given their income was below £5 Lakhs, and how to file for the current year and potentially previous years. The advice clarifies that filing is mandatory if income exceeds £2.5 Lakhs and explains the process for filing past returns, which typically requires approval from the CIT, especially if there's no refund due.

File ITR for current year
If your Income exceeds 2.5 Lacs , then it is mandatory to file IT return . so for F.Y 2018-19 and F.Y 2019-20 ,you have to file that time only , if your salary Income exceeds 2.5 .
For last two years you can file only if you are having refund case, after approval from CIT . for F.Y 20-21 IT return filing is mandatory to you .

Thanks @ prasad Nilugal

Since I've not filed for 2018-2019, are there any other option to file that again? What should I do as I have missed to file for 2018-2019

Only in case of refund , you can file with approval from CIT for F.Y 2018 and 19 .

Thanks, I do not have any refund or I don't know what do you mean by refund, can you please elaborate?

Refund means after payment of tax , anything balance tax remains that you have paid excess tax , can claim refund , in such cases you can file returns of previous years after approval from CIT .

Appreciate your short response, and if I file ITR for 2020-21 I should have my Form 16 ready right? ( I'm working in an MNC where I used to get form 16) but for me I have moved in to a different company and haven't downloaded my form 16 for 2020-21 year, what can I do in order to get the form 16> do I need to manually make one? If so, how can i do that?

I don't have access to my previous company's Payment portal where I used to get the form 16, since I have been resigned I no longer have access to this.
