My tax refund (by cheque) for 2006-07 was returned as I was not available on the date of delivery.

Now I want to claim it back. is there any time limit for this.. How should I claim this?  Is there a online process for this?

Hi,

I understand that your Income-tax refund cheque is returned due to non availability of the recepient. As the refund pertains to year 2006-07 a refund reissue request for this year cannot be made on the web portal of Income-tax department.

In such a case a letter should be written to the jurisdictional assessing officer (AO) requesting him to reissue the refund advice, providing brief descripttion about the reason for not honoring the refund cheque issued earlier.

Additionally, there is no prescribed format for making refund reissue request. A letter would suffice.

Separately, with regards to the claim of refund, it appears that you must have already claimed the refund either by filing Income-tax return form or it is determined by the AO upon completion of assessment. Therefore, there is no need to further file a fresh claim. The AO is duty bound to issue the refund determined.

Hope the above serves your purpose.

We met AO in person and raised a grievance online as well. But he is simply not closing it..

What course of action is available to us? Is there any higher authority with whom we can raise this concern..

Hi,

Usually, the income tax department replies to grievances submitted within seven to 10 days. You can also track your grievance on theย e-filing website. Request you to check the grievance resolution status.

Further, the Assessing Officer (AO) seems to be reluctant in issue refund advice because the refund relates to many years back (2006-07). It is advisable to follow up with the AO at periodic intervals in order to remind him about the same.

With respect to raising a concern, the same has been done by rising a grievance on e-nivaran platform of Income-tax department.
