Is annual PPF interest an exempt income?

PPF interest is tax free every year and is credited in PPF account on 31st March.

a) Does PPF interest get classified as "Exempt Income" as far as ITR is concerned? Why so?

b) If yes, then EPF(Employee Provident Fund) account also receives interest and gets credited. Should EPF interest also get classified as "Exempt Income"?

c) Do we need to report the PPF interest credited in PPF account on ITR-2 if the same is above Rs 5000? Why do we need to report it? What clue does the Income tax department get by knowing only the interest component in the PPF account?

d) Is there any CBDT notification or circular regarding the components that are considered as "Exempt Income" especially PPF interest and or EPF interest?

Please give link to CBDT circular if any.

So far there has been a mixed response whether or not "PPF interest merely credited in PPF account" is actually a Exempt Income to be declared if above Rs 5000. Some professionals have said that such interest is merely credited in account and need not be reported on ITR-2 unless the same is withdrawn in any year. If we dont need to report, then what does ITR-2 - > EI - > Line 1 (Interest Income) get considered for?

Some have said that reporting of the PPF interest is must, but they are all silent on the EPF interest part which is equivalent to PPF interest. Also, many employees have not received PF slips for last three financial years from EPFO because of their shoddy work.

Thus it brings the need to have clarification from CA Community as well as CBDT what constitutes Interest Income as Exempt Income.

Instructions of ITR-2 for  Schedul-EI say:

Schedule-EI

(i) Furnish the details of income like agriculture income, interest, dividend, etc. which is exempt from tax.

(ii) The details may be filled on cash basis unless there is any provision/ requirement to declare them on accrual basis.

Nowhere words like PPF interest, EPF interest is written. Interest could be something if a NRI has NRE deposits earning some interest which is exempt from tax, that piece. The spelling out of components in the "Interest" is missing.

Kind request to CA experts to give your inputs whether "Resident" "Individual" should declare annual PPF interest on ITR-2 if the same is above Rs 5000. Also cite if there is CBDT reference to this matter.

It will be helpful to all.

Can someone answer this question?

I am not a CA but I think PPF is beyond the jurisdiction of I.T. Dept as it is an act enacted by Parliament and falls under EEE (exempt exempt exempt) category. I.T. Dept. does not have a legal access to it, even courts to a great extent are not allowed to touch it. I have never shown PPF interest in my returns so far. You may however, take a view on your own.

It is better to show ppf interest in your return though it is exempt from tax
that more than 5000 is for agriculture income only

When asked in the local income tax department office they mentioned that PPF interest which is exempt income is required to be mentioned in the ITR2 and/OR if the annual PPF interest is more than Rs 5000 then by default ITR2 is required and ITR1 cannot be used by such assessess.

How far this verbal vocal reply from local income tax office is true, I dont know.

Only high performing hard core CAs can confirm on this.

I have been reporting ppf int under EI schedule so far. But sometimes missed also reporting, So far no issues
