in service tax is e-filing of returns mandatory for assesses? if yes then why is challan system given an importance ?

returns & challan both r different thing dear !!
e-filling of s.tax return is mandatory but not of challan !!
challan of service tax can b deposited online for manual

E filling is medatory for all assessee.. but the assesse has option to deposite tax by manual or online.
