Income tax return in transferred to ao since many years

hello friends

my past return status has been showing as 'transferred to AO' since 4 years. i have not got any notification from the IT department for any clarification or scrutiny. I had used a CA for that year. My CA  asked the AO about this and he was told due to some tech issue it has been stuck. but after many many months of waiting and asking again it is still stuck like that. What should I do? Is there any need to worry?

Is it the dept's problem to process it? dont they have any deadline to process very old returns?

Do you have any refund due?

If yes, file grievance, but if no, forget it.

Thanks for the answer. I dont have any refund ask. I am just afraid they may call me many years from now and ask me for clarifications when i have moved on in career and maybe working in a different country. also I am afraid if they find some discrepancy i may be asked to pay interest for all these years?

does not the income tax department have any time limits on processing old returns. crying

Well, you may be aware of reason for such transfer of the ITR. So, you can ascertain well about any possibility of penalty or fine. If there is no reason to panic, let it take its time. As per act, your responsibility to file the return and payment of legitimate tax is over. As for time period for processing of ITR, that too is over. But if anything fishy, it can be opened upto 16 years, (for any international transaction).

thank you. they have not communicated anything at all. nothing apart from the status on their website.

my guess is it might be money received from abroad. i am a freelancer and frequently receive money from abroad through wire transfers. is there a form of registration that would help? incidentally even last year's return has been transferred to AO.

Its duty of the officer to verify your (foreign) transactions/transfers with tax liability. But difficult to say when he should complete.
