Quick Summary
A society registered under section 12A received a donation, which was correctly declared and exemption claimed. However, they received a notice u/s 143(1)(a) stating the voluntary contribution is taxable. Experts suggest checking if the donation was explicitly designated as 'corpus' by the donor with a direction letter. If not, it's treated as general income and taxable. Reviewing the Income & Expenditure account and Balance Sheet in the ITR is crucial to identify where the donation was recorded and if any lapses occurred in claiming the exemption.

Please check the necessary field are filled in the ITR claiming exemption
Donation without a direction letter by the Donee that it's towards corpus of a Society, then it is treated as general donation income and taxable.

Check this point.

And then check how have you shown in ITR schedules.

You will then come to know where is lapse.

Check I&E and BS
where these donations are appearing ?
is it under I&E or directly as Corpus Fund in BS
