Income tax notice

First request the department how didn't you have demand for that year means how they process your return of income for that year and compare such date with your return of income filed by you and find out the differences and if the mistake your side then keep quite and not required to take any action, if the mistake is at the side of department's process then with the details of mistake and with the enclosure of evidence of documents like payment of tax chalanas etc... write a request letter to the department to correct the mistake and issue of refund for the wrongly adjusted amount. Still last year the demand status in not updated through online but now it updated so if the demand is due if any then it automatically adjust with the refund due to us.

                So first consider where and what is the mistake and take further step.

I am not sure if ITO can send demand notice for so old assessment. Is it authorized by CIT? 

I think he not received the notice of demand now, he received the earlier demand adjustment by the IT department from the refund available to him notice.
