Income Tax Intimation under 143(1)

Hello,

Today, I got an intimation from the Income Tax Department, Bangalore, under 143(1) saying that I need to pay a large amount of tax for the Assessment Year 2008-09. The letter says TDS is 0, under the column "As Computed Under Section 143(1)" ! I had got Form 16 from my employer for that year, where the TDS was all paid appropriately and the same form 16 was used to file the ITR. Basically, this letter is saying that no TDS happened at all. I've a copy of Form 16 and ITR for the concerned year.

Can anyone please explain what is going on ? And more importantly, what I should be doing now ? I don't know even know whom to contact. I heard I have to contact the "Assessing Officer", but who is it for me ? All this exercise is quite unncessary from my side, for the apparent fault of someone/something.

Thanks for any help.

Hey you have to reply to the office from where you got the intimation.

there may be a mistake in the income tax department, which can be rectify by a simple request to be sende to them regarding the mistake done during the assesing the income of you for the assesment year 2008-09. you have to send a letter u/s 154 of the Income Tax Act. along with the copy of form 16.

Thanks for your response. I hope that it is a mistake (perhaps a bug in some software) of the IT folks. In any case, I think I've to respond as you are suggesting. Can you please mention if there is any specific format in which I should write the letter u/s 154 ? I mean, is there some online format (.pdf file) maintained by the IT department, which I've to download, fill up and send ? Or is it just that I've to write it on a white paper ? If it is the latter, whom should I address it to ? And what should be the basic content ? I guess, I have to attach my old ITR and Form 16 as well.

Apparently, the location from whichi I got the letter (Centralized processing center, IT department, Post Bag no. 1, Electronics City, Bangalore) is not the address of the IT department. So, do I have to send reply by post to this address,  or do I have to manually go the actual IT office and tell them about this ?
