Income Tax Department Website Error While Importing 26AS

Hi i am trying to import Form 26AS on the tax-related software, but the process is failing with the following message:

“Currently experiencing difficulty in receiving a response from the Income Tax Department website.”

It also mentions that the issue could be due to an incorrect system time zone/date/time.

My system date, time and time zone appear to be correct, but I am still unable to import 26AS.

Is anyone else facing this issue today?
Is this a temporary issue with the Income Tax Department portal, or is there any workaround to successfully import 26AS?

Quick Summary
Users are encountering an error when trying to import Form 26AS into tax software, with the Income Tax Department website citing difficulties in receiving a response. While system date and time appear correct, the issue persists. Potential causes and solutions include disabling VPNs/proxies, retrying during off-peak hours due to portal traffic, updating tax software, checking localhost port communication, and ensuring the system time zone and sync are correctly set to UTC+05:30.

  • Disable VPN/Proxy: The IT Department portal blocks automated queries coming from non-Indian IPs or VPN network ranges. Turn off active VPNs or custom DNS services.

  • Portal Traffic: Server congestion or scheduled portal maintenance frequently causes request timeouts. Retry fetching during off-peak hours (early morning or late night).

  • Update Software: Income Tax Department frequently updates portal CAPTCHA protocols and API endpoints. Ensure your tax filing software is updated to the latest build version.

  • Localhost Port Check: The error popup originates from localhost:81. Ensure no background service or firewall/antivirus rule is blocking local port communications between your browser extension and the desktop software.

  • Time Zone: Ensure system time zone is strictly set to (UTC+05:30) Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, New Delhi.

  • Time Sync: Go to system settings (Date & Time), turn Set time automatically off and back on, and click Sync now to force alignment with time servers. An out-of-sync system clock breaks SSL/TLS handshakes with the Income Tax portal servers.
