HRA Query

Tax planning 562 views 2 replies

I stay on rent with lease agreement in my sole name. I used to pay the rent by cheque and claim tax break on HRA (with lease agreement as proof of rent). However, my wife has recently started working and now pays part of the rent (by cheque) while I pay the balance (by cheque). My land lord refuses to give a rent receipt in my wife's name citing that lease agreement is in my name.

The question is can my wife still go ahead and claim HRA tax break by submitting : a) a copy of the cheque payment to landlord and b) a copy of the rent agreement (which is in my sole name)

Dear SIR,

Since Landlord is not ready to give rent receipts in ur Wife's name so it is tough to convince the employer.

I mean Landlord is also correct on his ground so I would say you can split the rent agreements into two...

dear sir,

take the receipt either into ur name or into ur wife name whichever is beneficial to you according to the computation of total income.landlord is right on his part and ur wife can not claim hra just bcoz showing of a copy of cheque to his company.

thanks and regards
