I am living in Mumbai in a rented appartment. HRA of which is claimed by my husband. I pay rent for my family (mother) staying in Delhi (but it is not occupied by me). Can i claim HRA exemption?

Dear Swati,
no you cannot claim the exemption, since the section 10(13) specifically allows deduction only in respect of the premises occupied by you. Since you stay in Mumbai, you cannot occupy a premises in Delhi and as such, you are not eligible for the deduction
