HRA exemption

Hi, I have recently joined a company in Hyderabad. I was residing until now and have taken a rented accommodation in Mumbai. Although my spouse and child have shifted along with me, my mother and sister are still residing in Mumbai where I am paying rent. Is it possible for me to claim HRA exemption on the rent that I am paying in Mumbai and thus get a qualification of 50% of basic (as Mumbai is a Metro). I am currently staying with my relative in Hyderabad. It can be considered as a self-occupied property as my mother and sister are still residing there.

u can claim HRA for your city of job only.

The house owned by your relative is not self occupied property. You can claim HRA by payinng rent even to your relative.

Hi Nikunj,

As far as HRA is concerned, co. pays you HRA for residing in the city in which you are working.

U can only claim 40 % exemption as Hyderabad is not a Metro City.

For that you will have to pay rent to your relative in Hyderabad.
