How to obtain electronic reference number from gst portal

no its not mandatory. u have to just login ur gst profile, from menu create EIN & fill the detail thereon.then it would get generate

where it is mandatory, and its purpose please explain ? 

After login GST portal, I still could not find links to upload invoice or generate E-way bill ( electronic reference number). May I know the step by step guide to generate Electronic reference number? Without that we can noy move the goods., as per the rules

It has been deferred as on now, Plese try to get way bill in old format.

There are many new notifiacations regarding waybill which is yet to come from CBEC as government need some time for the software updation regarding waybill so for now you can work as you are doing previously till proper guidelines comes from cbec.
