Am  I suppose to have contract notes of Equity shares worth 12-15 years and before year 2000 ? Will the broker again provide me the cost at which the shares were bought 14 - 15 years ago? In the yearly summary only current price of share is mentioned . Original cost details ?????

Prime Brokering houses generally provide old transaction details, but sometimes sub-brokers may not  be able to provide you such old records. But, without proper evidence, it will be difficult to ascertain exact LTCG.

Being LTCG on equity shares exempt under section 10(38), if you have at least Demat account enties as of April, 2004 or older date, department will not be able to disallow the LTCG exemption, whatever it may be based on year ending rates.
