How to Crack CA at First Go

IPCC 2565 views 18 replies

AN OLD joke on passing CA examinations goes like this: There was a writing in a church that read, "Jesus never fails". A CA student added below that, "Then let him try the CA examination"!

Passing the CA exam is not as difficult as it is made out to be. Several students clear it in the first attempt and even secure ranks. Why, then, are others unable to crack it? The reasons are several.

There are two streams of students joining the course — one that joins after the intermediate or plus-two stage, and the other that joins after graduation. The stage at which one joins the course can be crucial.

Medium of instruction

A second major contributing factor is the medium of instruction. Those who study in regional-medium schools, face a lot of difficulty in comprehending the subject.

Exposure

A third factor is the exposure to the business world, terminologies, and so on. Students from rural and semi-urban areas face difficulty in understanding the subject due to inadequate exposure. Another drawback could be the lack of access to reading material, non-availability of textbooks, Internet facilities, so on. While these students are sincere, they may lack the right guidance.

Students can overcome the fear of the examination by following a regular and systematic study routine.

General study

Start preparing for the examination immediately on joining the course. Study regularly and conscientiously. It does not matter how many hours you study, but how much you understand. Qualitative study is important.

In addition to the student journal, subscribe to the journal of the Institute. It helps to keep yourself updated. Keep track of the latest in all the subjects: accounting standards (new standards, revision of old ones, interpretations, etc.) auditing and assurance standards, amendments to company law and other laws, Finance Act and Income-Tax law.

Contribute and subscribe to a good business newspaper. Essays on capital markets, tax matters and other subjects will be helpful.

Study material

Your study material is the most important. Supplement it with a good standard textbook. A good student does not require tuition. Tuitions certainly are helpful, but only when you have it in you to use them. For a professional, self-study and getting to the root of the subject is essential.

Attitude

Subjects such as law require repeated reading. Candidates often complain of not being able to remember the provisions/sections. Now, this is a matter of attitude. When one can remember film songs, sequences, dialogues, phone numbers, why not the section numbers? Students tend to read out of compulsion. Examinations are imposed on them. If it were not for examinations, would students have studied? Apply the attitude you have towards play to studies. The world will begin look different.

Strategies

Follow a strategy of study. Remember, you cannot study accounts independent of company law. Income-tax cannot be studied independent of accounting. Thus, these subjects are inter-related. You have to study all the subjects for the examination.

Take, for example, the issue of shares by a company. Read provisions of company law, prospectus, contents, liabilities for misstatements, and so on. You would have grasped the legal requirements. Then work out problems in accounting on issue of shares — at par, premium, discount, for consideration in other than cash, etc. Follow it up with audit of issue of share capital, resolutions to be passed, documents to verify, and so on.

Study the tax provisions for allowability of share issue expenses, etc. Thus, you would have covered the issue from all points of view. This may look cumbersome in the beginning, but once you get used to it, things become interesting. This way you will have covered a part of company law, a part of income-tax, part of auditing, as well as a part of accounting.

Group study

Group study can be helpful too. Form yourselves into groups of six. Thus six friends can cover six subjects. Rotate them among yourselves. Engage in group discussions. Subjects like tax, law, etc., can be tackled better this way.

Use a marker to highlight the material items as and when you study it for the first time. When you read the second time, you can concentrate only on the highlighted part. Grammar is, of course, to be built in into the answer.

All subjects are important

One should realise that the candidate should pass in all subjects and secure 50 per cent in the aggregate to clear the examination. Scoring 90 per cent in one and 10 per cent in another, will lead you nowhere. Distribute time judiciously for all subjects.

Other activities

Each of us has hobbies. Spare some time for that. This will help you unwind. It increases productivity. Develop certain hobbies and pursue them. A light game, for instance, or a crossword puzzle. At the same time, know when to stop. Get your priorities right.

A student should be physically fit, spiritually sound and mentally alert. Also, spare some time for fitness. You should be strong enough to withstand the stress and strain of hard work. Endurance is important.

Writing

Practise writing. What you read will prove futile if you cannot reproduce it on the D-day.

The final charge

Generally, the pressure valve is turned on only after the candidate pays the examination fees. There is a lot anxiety, nervousness, and tension. If a candidate is well prepared, last minute blues can be avoided.

The candidates should learn how to tackle each subject and perform accordingly. One should know which accounts need to be opened and how to reach the goal in the shortest possible route and quickly. Saying that you should pass 36 journal entries for amalgamation, 16 entries for issue of shares, etc., is unjustified. You should learn to play according to the wicket.

Passing the CA examination should become a routine, much like other examinations. Passing in the first attempt should be the rule and not an exception.

THANX 4 UR GUIDANCE SIR, HEADS OF U 4RM ALL COMMUNITIES MEMBERS.

well written deepak

is it really true dat u can DO IT without tuitions...as u put it...!!

HI PUNIT. I WOULD LIKE TO TELL U ONE THING, AS SUGGESTED BY OUR CHAIRMAN FOR BOARD OF STUDIES IN THE JULY EDITION OF STUDENTS NEWS LETTER, MAKE REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO UNDERSTAND ON YOUR OWN BEFORE SEEKING EXTERNAL HELP. UNDERSTANDING IT YOURSELF WILL AUTOMATICALLY HELP IN FIXING IT IN YOUR MEMORY. AS FAR AS COACHING IS CONCERNED IT VARIES FROM STUDENT TO STUDENT. FOR EXAMPLE X MAY NEED COACHING IN A PARTICULAR SUBJECT BUT Z DOEST NOT FEEL THE NEED. TO MAKE THE PICTURE MORE CLEAR I AM POSTING THE LINKS OF 2 GOOD ARTICLES BY ONE OF OUR SENIOR MEMBERS, THE VIDYASHANKAR.

i wish you will be helping the students comunity with the best

Hello Priya. We will all appreciate your efforts if you can kindly post some new advice for all of us. Thanks in advance.

Hello Nitin. I am not the person you are thinking of. I am still a CA in the making. Anyways welcome to the CAclubindia Community.

SOME MORE TIPS FOR THE WANNABES

1. THE CA course needs total commitment from day one. An aspiring CA should not get overwhelmed by the sheer vastness of the syllabus. Smaller durations of total concentration are more productive than long hours of skimming through the study-material.

2. It is often difficult to recall, especially after having finished one subject, what was learnt earlier. Making a note -- preferably in one's own handwriting -- of the important or troublesome areas would prove to be useful particularly during the 10-12 hours of study before the exams.
3. Students should start answering only after completely reading through the question. It is better to attempt theory questions first in practice-oriented papers, as it helps one think clearly while attempting the problem-based questions -- by which time the initial nervousness would also have subsided.
4. In questions that require to state whether the stand taken by an officer of the Department is correct or not, importance is more on reasoning, which must be proved with relevant case laws. But the names of case laws should be quoted only when one is very sure. If unsure, it will be in good interest to answer by saying ``going by/according to judicial pronouncements''.
5. While attempting problem-based questions, split the solution into a number of working notes. Very often, students get stuck for want of space. Space out the answer in the sheet after developing an idea of the solution.
6. Valid assumptions can be made when the question is not clear. It is advisable to list the assumptions as and when they come to the mind, lest one forgets to list them and moves on to the next answer.
7. Teachers could make a big difference to the way one prepares for the exams and presents the answers. My suggestions need not necessarily work well with every aspirant. If your strategy best suits your individuality, you are the achiever.
8. One word of caution though. Sometim es, the study-material may not be updated to incorporate recent amendments and pronouncements. Therefore, it certainly pays to look for sources that give periodic and reliable updates -- for example, the CA student's journal, revision test papers and the bare Acts. A thorough understanding of the various concepts enlisted in the study-materials should be supplemented with practising of problems/questions from standard textbooks.
9. The three Ds (discipline, direction and dedication) would help solve many of the problems students face.
10. In a professional exam, what is tested is the ability to think and analyse. Though memorising skills are also required to a large extent, one can have an edge if it can proved to the examiner that he/she can `think' better. This professional approach cou pled with a good presentation (clear and legible) can fetch the desired marks. Using the bare Acts for all law subjects would give a grip over the subject. It is also important to work out the problems rather than merely going through them superficially. Constant writing practice would give the speed to complete the paper well within three hours.

thank u again sir...but m still confused bat dat tuition stuff....

is it true dat tuitions give no value addition to a student...???

Hi Punit. Tutions certainly are helpful. The teacher can show you path but you have to walk yourself. But the selection of a good coaching is also important. The professor will clear the concepts in the class and will solve some basic and master problems from his material to clear the concepts further in a practical manner, but all this is of no use if u dont put in your own efforts. After the class go through the theory to have a broad view about the concept of a particular chapter. Make note of the adjustments/important points told in the class. This will help you in your revision process. Solve further more problems to gain confidence, speed and quick estimation. Just going to the coaching classes and not doing much yourself is not going to help you. Use the guiding torch of your professor and make your own way. Tution and self efforts go hand in hand.

Hi Punit. No need to call me Sir. I'm just one of you all. I haven't reached that level yet. Still have to work a long way to earn that respect.

Firstly wish you a very warm welcome to caclubindia.

Thanks a lot for these unique tips.

Might these would have been posted earlier by someone, it must would have changed various peoples lives.

Mindblowing.....................
