In case of House Rent Allowance least of the following would be exempt:-
a. an amount equal to 50 % of salary, where the residential house is situated at Bombay, Calcutta, Delhi or Madras and an amount equalt to 40% of salary where the residential house is situated at any other place;
b. Actual HRA; or
c. rent paid excess over 10% of salary.
In this way you can take the exemption, least of the above would be exempt and remaining portion of HRA would be taxable....
