Since you registered for your articled training before 30.04.2012, only GMCS-II course is applicable to you.

You have to complete the GMCS-II course before applying for membership of the ICAI.

Your friend, who registered for articled training on/after 01.05.2012, need to complete GMCS-II course after completion of 18 months of training but before completion of articled training. So, if he/she is eligible for GMCS-II, then you both can apply for GMCS-II at the same time.
