In order to conduct any business, you need a place of service (which could also be your home).
You need GST registration only if you are an eCommerce operator or if your sales are in excess of Rs 20 lakhs per annum. If you are selling through sites like Amazon or Flipkart, they will insist on a GST registration.
But if you are running a small business, selling products directly through the use of email, Whatsapp, Instagram, web advertisements or facebook etc. (other than your own domain/website) and turnover below Rs 20 lakhs per annum, you may not need a GST registration.
Please note that if you are performing inter-state sales or export, you will need to obtain a GST registration to conduct business.
