Quick Summary
For businesses registered for GST, including those with retail B2C sales and a turnover of £12 lakhs, mentioning HSN codes in GSTR-1 is generally mandatory. While HSN codes might be optional for B2C transactions themselves, a summary of HSN codes has been required since July 2017. If HSN codes aren't provided, a description of the goods or services must be included instead.

Irrespective of the turnover, each and every dealer whether small or large, they have to compulsorily mention the HSN code on the tax invoice issued by them, and give the HSN wise summary in GSTR-1.

I think in this case, HSN is not mandatory in respect of B2C transactions. For B2B, it is mandatory irrespective of turnover.

HSN summary mandatory in GSTR-1. If HSN is not given then descripttion needs to be given.

HSN summary has been always been mandatory since July 2017

If your client has taken GST registration then HSN Code is mandatory.
