I filed the income tax return myself for FY 2015-2016 just 1-2 mins after the deadline of 5th August 2016 Midnight.
My biggest mistake.
In a hurry I missed to notice a technical error in ITR excel and even paid self assesment tax. But i did not mention that self assessment tax in ITR. More bad of me.
I also quickly e-verified ITR using Aadhar. Height of foolishness!
When I got the demand notice few months later, i filed a rectification request with details for self assessment tax and the same day i dreamt about getting my money back. Wasnt it so easy? it wasnt.
CPC denied that request saying that it is a case of change in income therefore correction rights transferred to Assessment Officer.
the problem was with the salary field so my common sense told me that it could easily be accepted as a rectification. But CPC people might be having different thoughts about my intentions.
i somehow, after non trivial efforts, figured out the official email id of the AO. Wrote detailed mail with appropriate screenshots, etc and explained the problem.
no reply for a month or two. I again replied to the same email itself. This happened multiple times. I then realized that official email ids are not given to the AO for official purposes. It might be for their internal communication ;-)
i decided one day to visit the AO office. Unfortunately the time i reached there they were planning for a demonstration against some govt policy. In a hurry someone in the office promised me a reply to my email. I swear i cross checked every character in the email id (shared by that person) 10 times and matched it with the mail i sent earlier.
could be a digital india initiative. That person told me that a software to correct the income tax returns for Fy2015-2016 would be available in September 2017. I was very much impressed with the way govt office was being transformed. Truely digital india. just that mail technology is losing its shine.
Also on my request he gave me a landline number. I promised him in return that i wont call till the end of the week and wait for email reply.
the email reply never came. That person forgot the promise, after all he might have been very busy checking official emails. So i again replied to the same mail thread and reminded about that person's promise.
two days, no reply. I decided to call on the phone number given to me by that person in the AO office.
A lady politely answered to my phone call: "this is BSNL office. How can I help you?"
