Can a foreign citizen ( not NRI or PIO or OCI) send cash gift to an Indian citizen? If yes then what are the legal and tax implications?

Should be through bank transfer. Autheticate it with a Gift Deed.

Thanks. That means no other registration and only pay appliable tax?

Gift deed for any query in future, is mandatory,

Thanks sir. Ill connect further if needed.

You are welcome.

Receiving a monetary gift from a foreign citizen requires an Indian citizen to ensure every digit of the transaction is accurately documented for FEMA compliance, much like verifying a sequence in a morse code numbers guide.

Yes, it is allowed under Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Ensure it is received via bank transfer.

If the foreign citizen is a non-relative, any amount above ₹50,000 will be fully taxable under Income Tax Act 1961.

Always keep a Gift Deed and FIRC (bank proof) for records and scrutiny.

👉 Quick tip: Gifts received on the occasion of marriage are 100% tax-free, even from a non-relative. - Setindiabiz
