I am an NRI and have been filing ITR for past few years. This year too I was able to file ITR successfully. last week I got email regarding my refund which could not be processed ? due to account given being NRE?

I am trying to log into ITR portal to change receivable bank account to NRO but getting access denied message when I try to log in throau netbanking. My account is prevalidated. I do have the password too , but the site askes me to go through netbanking. and then cycle repeats.

I have emailed them at efilingwebmanager @ incometax.gov.in but got no response.

what to do next?

Quick Summary
Query is about Access Denied error while logging into the Income Tax e-filing portal via net banking for an NRI trying to update refund bank details. Suggestions include checking bank compatibility, clearing cache, using incognito mode, or switching to Aadhaar OTP login instead of net banking.

You might need to update bank account details in the ITR portal to an NRO account. NRIs typically need an NRO account for tax refunds in India.

For the login issue: If you are getting an "access denied" message via netbanking on the ITR portal despite having a prevalidated account and the correct password, try clearing your browser cache or using a different browser. If the issue persists, you might want to contact the income tax helpline directly for more specific help since email is not worked.

You can also try reaching income tax department toll free number.

The ACCESS DENIED error through net banking login on the income tax portal is almost always one of three causes.

First, check if your bank is on the empanelled list. Not all banks support net banking SSO for the income tax portal. The portal accepts net banking login only from about 30 authorised banks (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, Kotak, PNB, Bank of Baroda, etc.). If your bank is not on this list, the SSO will not work and the portal will return an access error.

Second, browser and cache issue. Clear all cookies and cache, then try in incognito mode. The portal is known to store old session tokens that block new logins.

Third, try a different login method. If net banking keeps failing, switch to PAN plus Aadhaar OTP. This is more reliable, does not depend on your bank, and works for most taxpayers. Go to incometax.gov.in, click Login, and choose e-Verify Services or ITR Filing, then use the Aadhaar OTP option.

Alternative: The IT Department mobile app also supports login without net banking if the portal is giving trouble.
