EPF withdrawal - Employee Contribution - Income Tax filing

TDS 255 views 6 replies

Hi,

I have recently withdrawn the EPF before 5 years of services between 2011 - 2014. EPF withdrawn in year 2018-19. No other source of income. I have shown employer contribution and its interest under Salary and the interest earned from Employee (i.e. self) contribution under other income source.

Please suggest how to show the employee (i.e. self) contribution while filing tax in the itr form and the section number, if possible.

Thanks!

The person responsible for paying the accumulated EPF balance will deduct TDS @ 10% at the time of payment. After that the employee has to show entire amount as salaries while failing return of income there is no such type of bifurcation while filing return of income.
A) Your contribution/Employee’s contribution – This is the amount contributed by you to your EPF. This portion of your withdrawal is not taxable. However, if you have claimed deduction under section 80C on your contribution in earlier years, you may have to pay additional tax as if 80C was not claimed by you for those years.

b) Interest on your/employee’s contribution – This portion is taxed as income from other sources.

c) Employer’s contribution and interest on employer’s contribution – Employer’s contribution and interest on it is fully taxable. It is taxed under the head salary in your tax return. When TDS is deducted on it, you are likely to see an entry under salary TDS in your Form 26AS for it.

How and in which section of ITR to show self contribution? If we do not show the self contribution then there is mismatch between total income shown in return and in form 26AS which is not acceptable.

Self contribution is not taxable to the far I know

If you have not claimed deduction on your investment, then it's not taxable, but if you have claimed deduction on your investment and withdraw the same within 5 years then it's taxable as salary income

show under the head salary if it's taxable or show under exempted income schedule

Thanks, I have not claim tax deduction in previous years for EPF. So should I show it exempted income so that the salary head + other income + exempted income is equal to the total income on form 26AS?
