is it not possible to join big 4 without reference?

Yes, its possible. Most Big4s prefer both groups passed students with good merit and subject knowledge. But before that to get a call from them, a well professionally prepared and attractive looking resume plays a very vital role. Most students who have merit are not getting calls because of this. So prepare your resume and try for reference (if there is chance) else apply through their website (available for only PwC). All the best.
