Duration of rnor period

I was working outside the country since the last 15 years. More specifically in the last 10 years from Apr 01 (2005) to Mar 31 (2016) spent less than 182 days each year in India from 2005 to 2016, qualifying as NRI in each of these years.

After 15 years of service due to unaviodable reasons was laid off in May 2016.

Would like to know duration of RNOR period. Would RNOR period be 2 years from Apr 2016 to March 2018.

Went back abroad after sorting out medical and personal problems in late 2018.

Please advice me about duration of RNOR

In your case, as you might have returned back in India after lay off in May 2016, RNOR period will be 3 years; as you satisfy the second condition ....

  • During the 7 financial years preceding the year been in India for a period of 729 days or less.

for FY 2018-19 also. (BUT check if your stay during FY 2011-12 to FY 2015-16, has not exceeded the days you were stayed out of India in FY 2016-17)

Thank you Sir, for reverting back. In 2016.

I came home for leave in end March so was not aware that I would lose my job in May.  From your reply I can gauge that I would be RNOR for a period of 2 years.

In each of the years from 2004 to 2016, I have done more than 183 days outside the country thus qualifying as non resident.

However, I had 1 query, was is necessary for me to file returns even as non resident, since I do not have any income in India (rent etc), no property, no investments.

For NRI, no income accrued or earned in India, no need to file ITR.
