Deactivation of PAN through AO

Client by mistake applied for new PAN instead of PAN correction.duplicate PAN allotted.

Applied for PAN correction again but NSDL sent email that there is duplicate PAN with corrected Name,DOB & father name. The PAN application is on hold since two years.

NSDL given direction visit AO.

One year back,Surrendered the duplicate PAN by client and submitted the letter and also a non judicial stamp which is also notarized...

But AO didn't deactivate the PAN till date.

Escalated to NSDL again but they said AO must deactivate it.

Anybody come across this situation??

Quick Summary
This discussion addresses the complex issue of deactivating a duplicate PAN card when a new one was mistakenly applied for instead of a correction. Despite surrendering the duplicate PAN and submitting necessary documentation, the Assessing Officer (AO) has not yet deactivated it, leaving the application on hold for two years. NSDL insists the AO must perform the deactivation, and advice is sought on how to expedite this process, including follow-ups with the AO and potentially the jurisdictional CIT office, while ensuring no demands or arrears are pending against the PAN.

Follow up wth AO office and may visit jurisdictional CIT office to expedite work.

But from your side see that no demands / no arrears are pending against the PAN No.
