De-stress and don't distress

As the countdown for Exams begins, students, parents and teachers get entangled in a vicious circle of a familiar monster named 'stress'. Once stress sets into a student's system, it affects concentration levels, memory and the learning process as a whole.

Most students who fail to manage time, suffer from stress. But there are many other reasons, specific to a person, that can lead to high stress levels. Hence the first step in beating stress is to identify the reason and then work towards it. Eventually, it is a joint effort by the parents, teachers and the students themselves to successfully control the stress.

Some common tips that can help in de-stressing:

For students (before and during exams):

Get organised: Set a time-table for the things you need to revise and the time required for them.

Set realistic goals: Divide your time in a balanced way to ensure that you cover all targets.

Change revision methods: When one method tires you out try to change the method. For instance, switch from memorising to reading and from making notes to asking someone to test you.

Give a break: Learn to relax by taking small breaks.

Plan your own way: Don't fall prey to peer pressure, work according to your own needs and plan accordingly.

Be positive: However, you must learn to take failures in your stride, as even if you don't do as well as planned, it doesn't mean the end of the world.

Balanced diet: Intake of a balanced diet accompanied with regular sleep is essential to reduce stress therefore take care of your health.

Reach the examination centre at least half an hour before the scheduled time.

Read the instructions carefully and follow each one of them.

Write neatly and to the point answers.

Divide your time according to the various sections of the paper.

If you are not able to recall any answer, don't waste time over such questions, get on to the next question. Later on you may return and attempt all questions.

For teachers:

Help students in identifying their strengths and placing faith in them.

Be accessible to students during exams, and help clarify doubts instead creating confusion.

Stress on time management without exerting unnecessary pressure on students.

For parents:

Encourage your child, boost his morale and create an environment for organised study.

Be optimistic; encourage your child to improve on aspects where he is going wrong or where he needs improvement.

Provide your child with a congenial atmosphere at home.

Don't compare your child with others. Listen attentively and patiently to the problems and worries of your child.
