Cricketing GLOSSARY

 

Skipper: Captain of the cricket team consisting of 11 players.

 

Bowled: Dislodging of a batsman after getting hit on the wicket.

 

LBW (Leg Before Wicket): When any part of the body of a batsman (except the hand) prevents the ball from hitting the wicket and the ball has not touched the bat or hand first and did not pitch outside leg stump.

 

Caught: A batsman is said to be ‘Caught out” when a fielder catches the ball before it falls on the ground.

 

Hit Wicket: When the batsman breaks the wicket with bat or body while playing a shot or starting a run.

 

Run Out: When the fielding side breaks the wicket with the ball while ball is in play and the batsman goes out of his ground.

 

Stumped: When the batsman moves out of his ground when receiving the ball and the wicket-keeper breaks the wicket with the ball.

 

Off-Beak: Deviation of a ball on pitching inwards from the off-side.

 

Off-Side: That side of the field which lies on the right-hand side of a right-handed batsman.

 

Chinaman: Off-break bowled by a left-handed bowler to a right-handed batsman.

 

Leg-Side: That half of the field nearest to Batsman’s leg (opp. to off-side).

 

Leg-Break: A ball that breaks from the leg-side towards the off-side on pitching

 

Leg-Bye: A run made when the ball touches any part of the batsman’s person except his hand.

 

Good Length Delivery: The ball pitching on such a length that the batsman has difficulty in scoring either off the front or back-foot.

 

Short of Length Delivery: This varies depending upon the height of the batsman. It can be defined to be a ball short of good length.

 

Flighted Ball: A ball delivered at a higher trajectory.

 

Field Positions: Strategic positions adopted by the fielding side which vary depending upon the batsman being  right-handed or left-handed. Various terms relating to field positions are- Wicket Keeper, First Slip, Second Slip, Third Slip, Fourth Slip, Gully, Third man , Point, Silly-point, Cover Point, Extra Cover, Deep Extra Cover, Silly Mid-Off, Mid Off, Long Off, Fine Leg, Short Leg, Short Square Leg, Silly Mid-On, Square Leg, Deep Square Leg, Deep Fine Leg, Mid-Wicket, Mid-On, Long-On etc.

Googly - This is a delivery by a right arm spin bowler which is a right hand batsman appears as if it will spin from leg to off, however, it spins in the opposite direction.
