Congress loosing Power

(Reuters) - India's ruling Congress party is losing voter support and would lose over 40 seats if an election were called tomorrow as billion dollar scams and corruption allegations take their toll, a poll showed.

A $39 billion telecoms scam, corruption accusations over last October's Commonwealth Games and the resurrection of a 25- year-old defence contract kickback scandal have all dented public confidence in the party that leads the ruling coalition.

In an election, Congress would see its majority slashed by a loss of around 40 of its current 206 seats, the AC Neilsen poll showed, as 44 percent of respondents said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's previously unimpeachable image had been affected by the scandals.

The Mood of the Nation poll, conducted by AC Neilsen and India Today magazine, surveyed 12,349 voters across 19 states in face-to-face interviews between Dec 4-19.

Opposition protests over inquiries into the corruption allegations have paralysed parliament since November, branding the government as ineffective and possibly leading to early elections in the five-year cycle to break the deadlock.

Congress won a second successive term in the 2009 elections. The poll said its main opposition, the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, would gain over 20 new seats in a election if it were held tomorrow.

Congress slipped in popularity by three percent among India's poor - a key constituent of its vote bank. But 42 percent of respondents thought a Congress-led coalition would still return to power in a general election in 2014.

Party chief Sonia Gandhi, seen as the real powerbroker of the party, saw her popularity as a prime ministerial candidate plummet to 8 percent from 27 percent in January 2006, with 43 percent of respondents saying her image had been affected by the scams.

please dont post all such things here....... CAcluindia is a nice place, lets disccuss somethig good.. lets motivate each other or help to uderstand our profession better ...  ur such post will turn up into a political  battle ground...and spoil such a nice environment here...

I agree with Vinzz. You have commented on political issue which is not in line with the purpose this forum. But even then I would say that you could suggest measures which C.As as professionals should use to curb the extent of corruption inherent in our system.

C.A.s being an integral part of revenue collection system and the expenditure disbursal system, they are the most apt people who can cut the rate of corruption down.

If not Professionalism than atleast Nationalism should be in the heads of C.A.

After all the old age saying, " As you sow, so shall you reap" should never be forgotten.

well i find myself immature to comment on such high profile issues....what i am concerned is trying to get my name on the voters list for the past 2 years and still no clue when will they do it...then even if i get registered i might need to wait fr next 5-10 years to cast my vote...

INCREDIBLE INDIA!!!...JAAGO RE!!!

Congress Ka Haath, Quattrocchi Ke Saath!

Arre Pruthal dear ,you have got me wrong. To be honest I was in complete support of your views. I just wanted to point out that this might not be the correct forum to post data pinpointing political parties, as people having sympathy towards a particular party may feel agitated. But believe me, I was far from 'agitated'. Infact in any other discussion forum I would have supported your views only. I have no sympathies towards congress and if you had read some of my e-mails that I am in a habit of sending to my friends than you would have never said so. I myself want to point out the 1000 follies of the current government but I refrain myself because I believe that this forum is not the right place. You know Religion and Politics are topics which should be discussed only in forums dedicated solely for that purpose.

You did not need to apologize and by apologizing you make me look like a villain, but honestly you misunderstood me. It was just a friendly suggestion and not an angry comment. Anyways, I hope you understand me now. But as I had said earlier also, I would like to ask you again to keep posting on issues such as corruption and if you can add your solutions to this problem than I am sure your posts would be highly appreciated.
