Company start up

Hi I am currently working for an IT company and would like to start up my own new company .. It is related to the same field . However since my company will be new I do not want to leave my old Job ... Is there a way to do both at the same time >> Can I start a sole proprietorship without any legal consequences and still work at my old job ?? Is there a way around this ??
