Quick Summary
This discussion clarifies capital gains tax calculations for inherited property. When a property is inherited, indexation benefits for capital gains tax are calculated from the period the asset was held by the previous owner. Specifically, for a property acquired by the father in 1978 and sold by the son in 2020, indexation should be applied from the financial year 2001-02, using the Fair Market Value (FMV) as of 1st April 2001.

Take indexation from 2001
Yes, in case of inheritance the indexation benefit shall be taken from the year in which the property is held by the previous owner. In your case it shall be 2001.
You have to take FMV as on 01.04.2001 and indexation also from F.Y 2001-02
