Capital gain on improvement in capital asset

Dear Sir\Madam, In Long Term capital asset any improvement arise and at the sale of that long term asset the the indexation will be use on cost of long term capital asset but my question is that whether for the purpose of improvement cost whether long term / short term provision required to see for indexation benefit or directly use index on it without considering long term \ short term period ?
