Can an article assistant call himself an auditor?

yes, he can call himself an auditor in technical and general terms, but not in law sense,

he is a representative of a auditor not auditor himself

i think he cannot call himself as auditor

Technically speaking, 

No statue whatsoever, does'nt stop anyone to call himself auditor or represent himself as auditor, for since there is no stipulations. But, the problem engross us when we say "Statutory Auditor".

You might have noticed that even Acts like Co.Act, I Tax, Local Sales Tax Act speaks:

TO BE AUDITED BY AN ACCOUNTANT WITHIN THE ,MEANING OF ....... OF 19XX(XX OF XXXX) ETC.

I was amazed during interaction with Phone/Service provider cos. like Reliance comm. or Bharti Airtel that they have Technical auditors who audits airtime, techical specifications and recharge vouchers tequie stuffs which has nothing to do with what we (i mean the traditional accountants etc.) as AUDIT.

To be on the neutral gear, now you can call yourself as "Assistant to Fellow Auditor(FCA)" or "Assistant to Associate Auditor(ACA)" .

When passed out you can call yourself (possess COP) Statutory Auditor

i feel UNLESS WE QUALIFY totally we should not use any designation like auditor,

if we are pursuing CA Fianl you can tell that u are semi qualified but not as an auditor

but you can call your self as audit staff or audit assistants.

i dont think so bcoz he has not passed CA final.

There are the People (Completed B.Com or M.com) who working as Paid Assistant in CA Firms, Calls themselves an Auditor...

And one more thing to note is, when we are placed in Audit of any client place, They introduce or call us as Auditors...

And as we are the one who audit and do all work (except signing) of Audit,

So, Is there be any mistake or misleading to call ourself an "Auditors"...?

you can be called as audit assistant where law specifically provides the same to done a accountant to do the required task
