Bank has reported excess interest in 26as

TDS 257 views 3 replies

Hi all,

For AY 2017-18, Rs 210000/- interest (194A) has been reported in 26AS under part A1 (Details of TDS for 15G/15H). Whereas the assessee has a FD of rs 100000/- only , the interest as per interest certificate Rs 10000/-

When he approached the bank, the bank says that the TAN no doesn't belong to them. The assessee doesn't have account in any other branch of the same bank.

Pl help.

It may happen because of mistake in entering PAN number while filing TDS return; which is liable to get rectified afterwards. You get TDS certificate (Form 16A downloaded from Traces) from your banker and proceed accordingly.

Thank you for the reply. The bank has not yet issued any qtrlyTDs certificates. The bank is denying that the TAN belongs to them. There is also no way of knowing which branch the TAN belongs to. The client is in a hurry to file return as he is leaving India for a few months.

If I file the return with FD interest of Rs 10000/-(which is correct), he might get a notice due to mismatch.

1. Bank must issue Form16A of first 3 quarters of the FY by now. Ask them in writing. OR

2. Get TAN no. of bank (particular branch) in writing, at least on their letter head.

3. Verify the TAN with 26AS. If different, rest assured for any solution to query/mismatch of TDS from department.

4. Generally, such returns are filed after May, but here is no option left!!

Good luck.
