Can I discontinue a CA articleship for passing the CA inter & then continue after passing the inter exam?

Yes, You can .....
Option 1.. Take a leave from your principal for exam and continue with same principal after exam .....or
Option 2.. If you want to joint other principal, than discountinue with principal (CA).....give exam...than joine with new principal (CA).
