Am i doing my articleship in the right place

Articleship 1670 views 6 replies

Dear Members of CCI,

Sub : Continue or Change articleship

I am really confused about my present articleship. I am in my first year of articleship.

I started to work here since June 2012. I work for a mid size firm.

It has over 10 but less than 20 company audits, but dozens of Proprietorship and partnership firms.

But overall, every client of us is a small one in its industry. As far as compliance is concerned, as you all know what level of compliance could a small company or firm face. Not much is found here.

I have done:

1. Company, partnership, proprietorship audit and accounts preparation.

2. Very few service tax audits and VAT.

But the query is, whether knowledge gained through present articleship is sufficient or as a trainee should i have to learn much more. I feel I am wasting time here, I almost sit idle during some days.  Since my auditor is more into VAT he is not considering tax audits and statutory audits.

I am interested in learning more, frankly speaking I am unaware of what is more and what is less. What the industry is expecting from a CA ? What all is required for a successful career ?

Kindly advice me on these issues.

YES! IF YOU WANT TO GET GOOD EXPOSURE YOU SHOULD GO FOR A NICE FORM WHERE YOU WILL GET GOOD EXPOSURE...

TAKE A DECESION BEFORE COMPLETION OF 1YEAR OF ARTICLESHIP

If you have that burning desire to gain more knowledge through practical exposure, it may be an appropriate time for you to move on in life. For this, you need to do couple of homework’s before changing your present principal.

Firstly, you need to make sure that your principal will not object in permitting you to take a transfer. This needs to be handled smooth and maturely if you need to have better relations in future. You may never know, when and how you may need the help of your present principal and vice versa.

Secondly, you need make sure that the prospective principal is willing to accommodate you as an articled trainee in his firm. This is very important homework which you need to do, so 6 months later you should not  be caught napping saying, my previous firm was much better than the present,

Finally take a decision which is going to equip you to face the challenges of tomorrow rather you sitting on judgment let us say 2.5 years down the line and regretting.

No one can decide on behalf of you, you need to be firm in deciding what is good for you in best interest of your future.

Thank you Mr.Ganesh and Mr.Sathish. But my query is simple,

1. Is my learning experience ,sufficient or not ?

2. Tomorrow if I enter an interview will this work experience ,help me get a job or will be of no use ?

3. Could you kindly suggest me what is the right level of training as an article one should undergo ?

For eg: At the completion of articleship you should have learnt the following, failing which it is proven you have wasted your time.

My present auditor is a good person, he will not object my transfer.

I hope my question is clear.

I once again thank you for replying me.

Vijayashankar,

The question, which you have raised, is pertinent but it will be unwise to advice how much learning or experience is sufficient.

Look at life more practically and hone necessary skills that will gear you to compete in this world. There is no end for learning, every day we learn many things that will contribute for our professional and personal growth.

It is also important to know the core area, which you wish to practice, or work in future and every one are not lucky to find a job on those lines. Put you heart into such work with full dedication; I hope you will carry high level of confidence if you change your approach to life.

Best wishes

Sathish

1. Learning experience is never sufficient, more you learn and you have urge to go further. Important thing is you should get your basics right. If after 2 years you are given a complete audit (whatever is the size of company) you should have trust in your self that you can do it.

2. In interview two things work.

a) First is you should be called for interview... This happens with help of two things in your CV and those are passing with flying colors (first attempt pass or if you get a rank that is the best) and good names of the companies which you have audited.

b) Once you are called for interview.... You should know what you have mentioned in your CV and you should have really good communincations skills (By communication skills I mean English)

3. Right level of articleship is that after completion, you should know how to get work done, how to do written communication (like writing an email), how to maintain your behaviour in office culture and again communication skills.

You must be wondering why I have not mentioned the level of work which you should be able to do.... Trust me that is secondry and if you know what you have done in 3 years, thats enough.
