If you've paid advance tax using an incorrect PAN, there are several ways to get it rectified and claim a refund. You can initiate the process online via the IT Portal helpline, contact your Assessing Officer (AO) if you know the correct officer, or visit the department office in person with a letter requesting the correction. Banks can correct certain challan errors, such as PAN details, within 7 days of deposit.

Write application to TDS Department 

1) Through online using IT Portal - Helpline Desk 

2) AO if knows the proper officer

3) Go to Department office in person if possible with Letter for correction.

In the case of the following errors, the bank branch accepting the tax payments are permitted to correct the challan data and in the time frame mentioned below:

  • Amount of tax – within 7 days from the deposit of challan
  • Assessment year – within 7 days from the deposit of challan
  • Major head code – within 3 months from the deposit of challan
  • Minor head code – within 3 months from the deposit of challan
  • PAN of the taxpayer – within 7 days from the deposit of challan
  • Nature of payment – within 3 months from the deposit of challan
