If you paid your advance tax using the wrong PAN, your tax credit will be linked to the PAN on the challan, not your actual PAN and the PAN error remedies depend on when you realize the error. If you discover it within the time frame to correct it, your bank will likely be able to amend your PAN based upon a written request and supporting documents. If you discover it after the time frame to correct the PAN has passed, you must go to your Jurisdictional Assessing Officer (AO) with the following documents:
- A copy of challan/CIN
- A copy of the PAN card
- A payment confirmation
- An application requesting that the PAN be amended/that the credit be transferred
You cannot file a request for correction of PAN through the normal online challan correction service on the e-filing Web site; this utility is designed for the correction of AYs, principals, and sub-principle changes only. The payment has been made and credited to the Government, the issue is the proper allocation of that payment, not its loss. The AO will have the ability to begin the necessary correction process; however, it could take some time for your request to be fulfilled. Therefore, submit your application as soon as you discover the error and continue to follow up with the AO.
