5 Ways You Can Be Happier at Work Right Now

No matter how passionate you are about your business, the stress, long hours, and a myriad of worries can leave you feeling unhappy at work. According to a June 2012 report by the Conference Board, an independent business membership and research association, only 47% of Americans are satisfied with their jobs.

"We spend way too much time at work to not behappy," says Beth Thomas, author of Powered by Happy: How to Get and Stay Happy at Work (Sourcebooks, 2010). Being unhappy at work can not only affect your mood, but your productivity and your company's bottom line.

Bring joy into your job and improve your company's success with these tips:

1. Stay rooted in the present. "Many of our negative thoughts come from worrying about situations that may never happen," says Thomas. While entrepreneurs often have to make contingency plans, constantly thinking about the worst case scenario can place undue stress on your body and mind and drain it of resources that are better used in more productive ways.

"The best way to deal with negative thoughts is to separate fiction from fact," says Thomas. So, the next time you find yourself facing a negative thought, analyze the situation and ask whether you're reacting to a real or imagined situation.

2. Engage in positive thinking. Shifting negative thoughts to positive ones can help to improve your mood and mindset. "Every time a negative thought comes into your head, stop and think about a positive one," says Thomas. Do this for a few weeks and you'll quickly notice that you're creating a new habit that will enhance your happiness not only at work, but in your daily life.

3. Help others. Whether getting involved in philanthropic activities or helping your staff improve in their jobs, Thomas says charity is the secret to lasting happiness. "Happiness at work isn't about what you alone achieve. It's not about helping yourself look better, but about making everyone on your team perform better," says Thomas.

Setting up an employee mentoring program where senior staff members assist junior staff, or getting your staff involved in a philanthropic activity such as a local food drive or a charity cycling event can improve the happiness of everyone in the office.

4.Take a break. While entrepreneurs are often motivated by positive stress, the kind that pushes us to do more, it's important to recognize when your mind and body need a break. "Even if you like your job, stress can weigh you down and make you unhappy," says Thomas. Schedule a few days off or find an outlet after work or on the weekend to have fun, rest your mind and rejuvenate yourself.

5. Keep a gratitude journal. Happiness doesn't come from getting something you don't have, but recognizing and appreciating what you do have. Write down five things you're grateful for each day before you start work, or before you leave the office at the end of the day, to retrain your brain to focus on the positive.

charity is the secret to lasting happiness Truly said....thanks for sharing Revathi...

dear ms Revathi, u r right that is what we teach in humanbehavior at work in MMS/MBA programs, as a visiting faculty at JBIMS I TAUGHT  for some years in perception management too. interesting part is the student participants mostly suffer from what placeent i will get and whether i will get a lot of stipend or salary that thought becomes his rim on him. so he or she though nods their heads yet they are back to squire one. Same I observed in IIB course teaching time at bank officers doing CAIIB and the when it became IIB&F same predicament one can clearly observe if you are a weii trained psychologist not a psychiatrist

Psychologist  gives positive messages consistently to see the person moves in positive cycles unlike psychiatrist who treats one after one gets into negative syndromes and he gives oral medication that is the big difference one can observe.

Psychologist treats mentally a person befre he or she gets affected, that way when i was a visiting faculty at musssouri for civi sevices probationers and that reinforces the probationer never to gets bogged down  by pressure of stress of his or her work as civil servants every day face all kinds of stress and per force they need to kee himself or herself out of stress so that he/she can really meaningfully handle issues.

but unfortunately he or she beco9mes very victim as the course  given to them and practise is not adequate and they as civil servants complicate issues.. you could have seen how 2G spectrum surfaced just because the civil servant instead of guiding the minister he is guided by minister as minister is not really aware of ground realities but the minister holds office if he is ucky maximum for five years but civi servant continues in the mill for full 30 years approximately if he does not resign or opt out of the cadre.

Siimilar experience as psychological training faculty for DIGs/IGPs of all india in 2005-6 i was requested by JBIMS then director Dr Jhadav as that program was ordered by then Home minister Shiv raj Patil to be conducted by Mumbai univ by JBIMS.

i observed the problems in all of them in spite of several years they were in IPS under different field duties and ther mind was so conditioned that they practically refused to mentally modify themselves as they had got totally controlled by a syndrome of being instructed by ministers and thus they could not recover from that cycle though one can observe especially by a well trained psychologist trainers and in fact most officers are in that syndrome of being guided by ministers not fully appreciating that minister can be at the most 5 years in that position. you could have seen the same home minister has to quit in favor of other after 26/11 at Mumbai. But that problem continues and so in fact 99.9 recurring civil servants are really not potential civil servants as they had gi8ven in to minister guidance insted of he or she guiding him.

so also when i was to handle in the colege of Naval warfare (Navy) a lot of commanders were given to a situation that he is a commander and not to listen to other views so they pass trhrough similar situations. You could have seen when Gen VK Singh as COAS AT DELHI  Lt Gen retd accused to have  induced him in Tetra truck deals and several situations like that, there are   many.

To say 5 ways is easy but to get at that one needs to be trained rigorously over years, else it is just peripheral.

This is an opinion only and the 5 ways u said is right but many can reach them is vital to be seen..Adv Dr.G.Balarishnan
