2 questions on shipping

Thank you for all your help on this website, I check it a lot. I am buying various items in India and then shipping them by courier to the U.S. I have an IEC code. My questions are.

1. Do I need to register for a VAT # even though there is no VAT charged on exports?

2. Do I need to pay TDS on the amount I am paying to the courier for international shipment of exports? I'm thinking the answer is "no" to both of these, but have heard various things, so I wanted to double check with the experts. Thanks :)

Who Should Register

You are required to register under DVAT if:

1. Your turnover in the year preceding the commencement of the DVAT Act exceeded Rs 10 lakhs;

2. Your turnover in the current year exceeds Rs 10 lakhs;

3. You make any interstate sale; or You make interstate purchases for resale in Delhi.

If you are not already registered, your obligation to register and pay tax starts on the day when your turnover exceeds Rs 5 lakhs, or you make an interstate sale or purchase.

You need to apply for registration within 30 days, once you cross these thresholds.

If you deal entirely in exempt goods, you are not required to apply for registration under DVAT.

You are required to Deduct TDS on Courier Companies even your product is exported outside India U/S 194C.

Guarav Tiwari,

Thank you for your responses.

I notced on your answer about VAT you mentione DVAT or Delhi VAT. However, the company is registered in Karnataka.

Would the same requirements apply, or does Karnataka have a different set of requirements.

Thank you.
